Prescription Drug Misuse

Who we are

ASAP created the Prescription Drug Misuse Prevention Task Force after passionate parents in Pasco County decided it was time to make a difference to stop the abuse and misuse of prescription pills in our community. In 2015, the Substance Exposed Newborns task force was merged with the Prescription Drug Misuse task force. ASAP, in coordination with the Health Start Coalition of Pasco, has developed a presentation for obstetricians on how to screen pregnant women for substance abuse. This presentation was developed due to the high numbers of newborns born in Pasco County diagnosed with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS). This presentation addresses current drug trends, use of Florida’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, maternal screening criteria, and outlines a step-by-step substance abuse screening process. The goal of this presentation is to both prepare the medical community for changes that will accompany the Affordable Care Act of 2014, particularly the integration of substance abuse and mental health into the medical setting, as well as to educate medical providers on the importance of early screening and it’s impact on health outcomes. A manual on how to screen pregnant women, literature for distribution to patients, and multi-media accompanies this presentation.
